>> hello, again, everyone, i'm heather holmes. well, a church was filled following the explosion. today is filled with mourners they are tearfully remembering rebecca morales. she was just one of seven people killed in that fire. mike mibach joins us now live from sanbruno. mike? >> reporter: heather, there were stories about jessica's smile, there were stories about her laughter. and then there was a story that described the bond between her and the woman who brought her into this world. ♪ how sweet the sound ♪ >> reporter: tonight a celebration of life, the life of young jessica morales. the 20-year-old's family and closest of friends guided her into the church in the highlands where on this summer weekend she was remembered for

her openness, gracefulness and her love for life and friends. >> she was my best friend, my sister, my partner in crime and my ray of sunshine. she shook my quiet little world with laughter, smiles, tears and most importantly, love. >> on behalf of the family, i would like to welcome you. >> reporter: jessica morles memorial was attended as by hundreds of people. her casket dressed in showers, different shades of purple, her favorite color. her teenage years were filled with passion and design. as she grew into a young woman, as one friend said, it was evident she was on her dream path. >> i'll never forget jessica's curly hair, her big smile. she was a sweet and loving girl and she transformed into a beautiful, beautiful young lady. >> reporter: a young lady so close to her mother. >> jessica forever changed my life. and i had the privilege of

being her mother. i wish for more, but what parent doesn't in the case of losing a child? i am supposed to go first. >> reporter: the mother/daughter relationship can be powerful. this one appears it was. renee called jessica her angel. one so easy to love. one who will forever be in her heart. >> you brought me so much happiness. i feel like the luckiest person on earth to have been your mother. thank you so much, baby, for being my daughter. >> reporter: jessica mo are. ales burial is scheduled for monday right here in the pens is a. reporting live in sanbruno mike mibach, ktvu, channel 2. they plan to begin removing the destroyed homes in sanbruno as soon as next thursday. the environmental health director says concerns about metal and asbestos about the houses is prompting the

cleanup. insurance money and public funds will pay for it. homeowners have the option to participate or they can bring in their own contractor. the director says tests indicate there is no health danger outside the burn zone. but getting that debris removed is a health priority. meantime federal investigators reportedly have discovered that when the explosion occurred, pg&e was running gas through the pipeline at a higher pressure than the utility has claimed. sources close to the investigation tell the mercury news that the gas pressure was at least 386 pounds per square inch. not the max maximum the company claimed. the pipe was meant to handle up to 400-psi but experts say if that line was corroded or cracked it might not be able to handle pressures near the maximum. the paper reports pg&e now says it cannot comment on the pressure issue. >> one of the sanbruno residents has filed a lawsuit in connection with the pipeline explosion. steve dare rented a home on dover court.

it was not damaged, but he had to evacuate for three days. dare's attorney says he is seeking class action status for the suit which is demanding a third party handle the $100 million recovery fund set up by pg&e. pg&e said it hadn't seen the lawsuit and could not comment. a sanbruno teenager has organized a benefit concert tomorrow to help her community. the neighbors for neighbors event happens tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the softball field at capuchino high school. it has food and family activities. donations will be accepted to go to the lions club fund to help victims of the disaster. for all of the latest information on the sanbruno explosion and fire, including details on the benefit concert tomorrow log on to our website ktvu.com. hard to believe, but it is the last weekend of summer. so did today's weather give us a preview of what's to come? our meteorologist mark tamayo joins us now with some approaching wet weather.

mark? >> reporter: that's right, health. you can see right behind me the cold front generating heavy rainfall up to our north. crescent city is approaching the bay area overnight. we are expecting some rainfall first thing tomorrow morning. here is the distribution as you would expect most of it will be in the north bay. even across the hills a half an inch. south bay just a chance because the rainfall amounts will taper off quite a bit as the system heads to the south and weakens. here is our forecast model. you can see the bulk of the action first thing tomorrow morning, 8, 9 and 10:00. but the afternoon will be a different story. coming up break down the afternoon forecast coming up in just a little bit. >> friends of a nevada dough of a nevado high school student set up a shrine on the road where he died. the 15-year-old victim was one of four passengers in a bmw driven by the classmate. the 16-year-old driver was unlicensed and drinking when he lost control of the car and

smashed into a calculates truck of the the community is upset. >> he was such a great kid. he is there one day and gone the next. the second period he was just walking into my class handing me a et cetera no. the next thing you know you find out he's gone. >> he was a very outgoing person. everyone loves him. too many friends. >> one of the injured passengers remains in critical condition tonight. police say the other two passengers treated and released. the driver was also injured. he faces felony dui charges. highway 116 in sonoma county was shut down for an hour and a half today because of an accident that badly injured one person. both directions were blocked after 10:00 just east of there. the highway patrol said a pick- up truck overturned. the injured remains in the hospital in critical condition. officials are investigating this as a possible drunk driving case. san francisco police tonight are trying to figure

out who burned an islamic holy book and then threw it ina garbage can. the koran was discovered in a trash can belonging to the islamic society of san francisco on jones street. they say it was singed on many pages and appears to have been a deliberate act. >> our concern is that this is part of a national trend. we have seen attacks on mosques in florida and new york and texas and tennessee, wisconsin. even as close by as chico. but this is the first one we have seen in the last few months in the bay area. >> islamic leaders say recent controversy over a florida's cancelled plans to burn a koran and the ground zero mask in new york are feeding anti-muslim sentiments. san francisco police have made no arrests in this koran burning. >> sarah shoard is on her way home to the united states at this hour. but several more days before the federal prisoner in iran comes home to the bay area.

ktvu's ken pricard reports. >> reporter: not hours before her flight home she thanked the president of oman for facilitating her release from the iranian jail. >> i will always associate the sweet smell of sandalwood and the chance to stand by the ocean listening to the waves. >> she and shane and josh were arrested in july of last year after they allegedly crossed the remarks iran border on a hiking trip. they said they will face trial for espionage. >> please, please extend your prayers to my fiancee shane and my friend josh. in shallah, they will soon be free. >> reporter: she was ored released by an iranian judge citing medical reasons. the president said her release

was a humanitarian gesture. but bay area journalists marion says his gesture is no gesture at all. when he is at the united nations today where we spoke to him by phone. >> it shows that the release of sarah shoard has nothing to do with the president. he has manipulated the u.s. media to believe that he was behind this. they should follow her release with the release of josh and shane. >> it would be a significant humanitarian gesture for the iranians to release them as well. >> but demands by iran for a prisoner exchange have gone unanswered. marion says iran's motivation to retain the two americans is diminished. >> they have failed to get something for the two out of this case. and now the time has passed

. the days are numbered for some horses and their owners at a popular pores stable. the state public utility commission says the horses must leave the property by november 15th. ktvu's christian kaf it ton explains why. >> chris and woody have called the skyline stables for five years. but in a matter of months the barn here will be just a memory. >> we are pretty much the last -- the last stables out here. and once we're gone, you know, stables aren't going to come back. >> reporter: the san francisco public utilities commission is final idahoing seismic upgrades scheduled to be completed in

2015. the new $250 million project will include a reservoir and emergency power generation plant. the bulk of those new facilities will have to be located at the site the pcu has lease today skyline stables for decades. >> unfortunately the site is so compact, it is a restricted site that we simply don't have room to maintain the stables on the sites with the improvements to happen. >> reporter: the key is finding a new location for the horses. >> we have been in open discussions with them for the last few months. we continue to meet with them pretty much on a weekly basis. >> reporter: about two dozen of skyline's riders gathered today for a barbecue saying good-bye to their stables. skyline sits between two major fault lines on the peninsula and that's why the puc says it will make a go ahead location for an emergency water supply. the system would provide water to 2.5 million customers in the event of a major quake, something they at skyline can't understand. they are hoping the puc makes room in their plans to relocate the stables.

>> even if we sign payments for a relocation -- papers for a relocation, until we actually have horses going into stalls, it's not a sure thing. >> reporter: skyline stables are one of the few cooperative stables. owners here lend a hand and in exchange pay a lot less money. other facilities might price some of the equestrians right out of the bay area. >> to take my horse down the peninsula, i am going to have to drive 30 miles to a place that i can only afford to put my horse out to pasture. 3-because i can't afford it. i am retired. i can't afford to put my horse somewhere else. >> reporter: both sides are currently exploring their options, including the possibility of another site on puc property or possibly at the cow palace. this is ktvu, channel 2 news. there is some hope the jockey badly injured in a racing accident could receive experimental treatment for his paralysis. michael martinez is currently at highland hospital in oakland

paralyzed from the waist down. a horse racing journal is reporting that doctors at northwestern university hospital in chicago are trying to determine if their i am bean inning stem cell treatments could help cure his paralysis. if they do, martinez has to be at northwestern by next sunday. federal investigators say the pilot of a small plane that crashed two weeks ago into a redwood shores lagoon never told air controllers his plane was having trouble. the twin engine beach craft queen was carrying two passengers and thpilot when it went down minutes after takeoff from the airport. the ntsb said the pilot discussed making a left turn after takeoff but instead turned slightly to the right. and then never corrected. that's when the plane rolled and fell into the water. the cause remains unknown. no one survived. the highway patrol conducted surprise inspections today on san francisco tour buses. with help from san francisco police, chp officers pulled over buses at random and

brought them to the muni yard on powell street. they checked the mechanics of the buses, as well as the driver's licences and the company records. officers say tour bus inspections are critical. >> when these large vehicles are involved in crashes, it usually results in freeways being closed for numerous hours, as well as a group of people suffering some very serious or fatal injuries. >> out of 41 random inspections today, officers took four buses out of service. the tour bus crash in monteray county killed five people. in march a tour bus lost its brakes on a san francisco hill. no one was hurt in that mishap. there is word of a glitch in the new clipper fare system that allows cheater at one station to ride muni for free. the trick reportedly is to reach over the clipper card gates, wave a hand and trigger the motion sensor that let's people out of the gate. that opens the gate for cheaters to enter. but the jig is up. muni says it has stationed fare

inspector there is to stop people from taking advantage of the freebie, while engineers work to fix it. it works on muni, bart, ac transit and cal train and golden gate district ferries. power is fully restored in the east bay last night after an outage that lasted much of the day. power went out just after 12:30 affecting 6,000 customers in the area. around 8 p.m. the final 200 customers got their electricity back. pg&e says wires came down in an unidentified part of the area and investigators tonight are trying to figure out why. environmentalists are applauding a judge's decision to scrap plans to add more piers, ramps and boat slips to the shoreline of lake tahoe. the federal judge in sacramento ruled the plans did not do enough analysis of the environmental impact those new facilities would have on the lake's clarity and the fish. now the tahoe regional planning agency has to decide whether to

draw plans -- drop plans for additional facities all together or come up with a revised proposal. the volunteers gave kids a new place to play today. they built a new slide and jungle jim at toyon park. the design is based on childrens' drawings of what they wanted. the recreational director says every park should have a safe spot for kids. >> it gives them the opportunity to be creative. to be imaginative. to be physical. we need all of the kids to be physical nowadays instead of on their computers they are here playing. >> high school students also help clean up the park and put down new grass. well, protestors greet the pope in london. the controversial issues demonstrators want the vatican to change its stance on. and the pope's response. miners trapped underground in chile had not one but two reasons to celebrate today. we will show you why. i am currently tracking the weather system that will produce some rain showers across parts of the bay area for tomorrow. coming up, when the rain clouds will be moving out of town.

. in london today, pope benedict the 16th again addressed the priest sex abuse scandal meeting with some victims. but his words weren't enough for thousands who turned out to denounce the pope and the catholic church. perdues reports. >> reporter: a strong apology from pope benedict the 16th to victims of sexual abuse by catholic priests. at a mass inside westminster cathedral in london he expresses both shame and humiliation at the church coverup. >> above all, i express my deep sorrow to the innocent victims of these crimes. >> reporter: the holy father had an emotional meeting with five victims of sexual abuse prior to a massive vigil in london's hyde park. >> i fear for their emotions. >> reporter: but for thousands

respect the results despite the violence and the fraud. the demonstrations were against the japanese detention of a fishing boat captain whose vessel collided with japanese coastguard boats. but the anger also comes on the 79th anniversary of the japanese invasion of northern china. that led to japan's occupation that lasted 14 years ending in world war ii. and in germany, the annual octoberfest began today with some new rules that may not go down well with some beer lovers. for the first time smoking has been banned in the beer tents. octoberfest draws millions of visitors from around the world that dates back 200 years when it was first held to celebrate the wedding of crown prince ludvig of bavaria. >> 33 miners deep in the mine marked the nation's 200th birthday by eating traditional meat pies sent down to them in tiny tubes. but thholiday wasn't the only thing celebrated. engineers punched a new hole down to the men yesterday, one

that eventually could become the route to freedom. jonathan hunt reports. >> reporter: the chilean government says there is a breakthrough in getting to those 33 trapped miners. a bore hole has reached the men. this will eventually be their escape route. it is the first of three key efforts to get the men out. for the rescuers who have been doing the drilling, the past month and a half has been a challenge. >> we have drilled for oil and gas. we drill for water and minerals, things of that nature. but drilling for human life is a completely different task at hand. i mean, it's so much more important than anything else that we've been drilling for in our careers. >> reporter: the head engineer of the operation says this is progress. but much more work still needs to be done. starting with widening the hole so it is big enough to pull the men to the surface. after that, they need to insert a metal pipe to prevent the hole from collapsing. all of this could take another 4-6 weeks. but for the families who are so

. bp engineers are said to begin pressure testing at this hour to confirm they have totally and permanently sealed the blown out well that gushed almost 210 million-gallons of oil into the gulf of mexico. crews today began drilling up the deep hole they used to push cement into the bottom of the well. engineers still need to confirm that the well is sealed before they officially declare it dead, which they expect to do tomorrow. a foreman todays expressed the relief many workers say they feel. >> just to finish this project, i mean, that so many people have worked so hard on. i mean, there is literally hundreds of people that have been involved in this process. and my thanks go out to all of those people that have helped make this a success. >> the spill began on april 20th when the deepwater horizon oil rig above the well exploded, killing 11 workers. it was by far the largest oil spill in u.s. history.

the last flights have left bermuda and everyone still on the island tonight is bracing for hurricane igor. the beaches were empty today as the wind and waves picked up and the tourists fled. the hurricane is expected to make a direct hit on bermuda late tomorrow or early monday. igor is a category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour. in mexico, the cleanup got underway today after hurricane carl came ashore on the gulf coast yesterday with 115 miles per hour winds. at least seven deaths are being blamed on that storm. forecasters in the city of veracruz said eight inches of rain fell in the first 90 minutes. after the hurricane arrived there was widespread flooding and some landslides. indiana republican congressman mike pens was the top pick at a straw poll at a political gathering in washington, d.c. called the values voters summit. former arkansas governor mike

huckaby came in second. >> this election year is so very important for us because it can provide the back-stop so that even if the president wishes to inflict upon us an extreme left agenda, there will be a back-stop in the congress. >> family research council sponsored the event. 2,000 participants serve interested a host of candidates and presidential hopefuls. speakers stressed conservative positions on social issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage. and called for a scaling back government and strengthening the military. newly nominated tea party favorite christine o' donnell came off fresh from her primary in delaware where she defeated a long-time moderate incumbent. she received a huge ovation when she took the podium at the convention. she said values voters aren't trying to take over the country but that "they are our country." president obama issued a

dramatic appeal tonight to african american voters to try to get them to the polls on election day. the president told a congressional black caucus that republicans are trying to turn back the clock on the progress his administration has made. he implored them to rally their friends and colleagues to prevent a republican congressional landslide many political analysts predict will happen in november. the president has spent much of this week appealing to minority voters who are tradition democratic constituency. >> sponsors of califora's proposition 8 have filed court papers hoping to appeal a recent ruling that declared the same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional. in august, u.s. district judge vaughn walker ruled the measure violated the constitutions guarantees of equal protection and due process. the group protect marriage filed a brief yesterday with the 9th circuit court of appeals saying, in part, there is no fundamental right to marry a person of the same sex. proposition 8 opponents have

until mid-october to file their response. the 9th circuit is expected to hear the can a us in december. a man once convicted of serial murders in the central valley is out of prison tonight. lorne herzog was released but went immediately to a modular home on prison grounds. he was initially sentenced to 78 years in prison for three murders in san jose county in the 190s and 1990s. but in 2004 an appeals court tossed out his conviction and reduced his sentence ruling that his statements were illegally coerced. as part of his parole he is subject to go. ps monitoring and a curfew. the berkeley home of an elderly couple today got some much needed repairs thanks to the east bay north chapter of rebuilding together. volunteers did some painting, weather eyed windows and doors and installed a new toilet. rebuilding together refurbishes the homes of elderly and disabled people and the

community facilitate -- or the facilities that serve them. in the past few years the organizations say an increasing number of people have asked for help. >> as a result of the economy, we have definitely seen an increase in people applying and needing assistance, as well as the facilities because many of the facilities are non-profits as well. >> the east bay north chapter says they have 33 projects scheduled this year. the group says they have so many applications for help it can only take the neediest of the needy. multiple agencies investigating a dead whale that came sailing into san francisco bay on san francisco thursday on the bow of a huge carrier ship say it likely was not struck in san francisco bay. they say the owner of the ship is cooperating with investigators. but they say they don't know yet if the 30-50-foot whale was dead when the ship hit it or if it died in the collision. marine experts say many whales are cruising the waters out the golden gate because their favorite food krill is plentiful there right now.

they say it is possible whales won't see ships coming because the whales are eating and are distracted. >> governor schwarzenegger will not attend a conference of governors of border states next week. his office says schwarzenegger will remain in sacramento to hold talks with leaders on the delayed budgets. california set a record for the delay 7. lieutenant governor able moldenado will take his place. he stood in for the response for the sun brown pipeline explosion because schwarzenegger was in asia. a convicted sex offender wanted by the police reportedly has been arrested in wyoming. 43-year-old alfred dominico is wanted for battery and failure to register as a sex offender. so the wyoming gazette newspaper reports troopers arrested him on wednesday. and for a high-speed pursuit along green river which is along i-80. he now faces additional

[ music ] well, we are wrapping up the last weekend of what has been a very strange summer with the rainfall. in fact, some rainfall just to the north bay area. it will be here first thing tomorrow morning across a go ahead portion of the region. right now on the maps i can show you this on live storm tracker 2. picking up some heavy rain across crescent

city. just over an inch and a half of rain over the past 24 hours. at least a closer inspection of the southern extent of the rainfall you can see it around fort brag and this will gruelly spread to the south overnight. an interesting scene earlier this evening looking out across the bay. you can see the fog is developing over the bay and just leaping over the bay bridge and the fog will continue to be on the increase. some mid and upper levels clouds as well. that storm system and that cold front generating moderate to heavy rainfall up to the north. the event you'll track as we do head into sunday here is that cold front. most of the activity targeting the north bay. target time will be from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. when the bulk of the rainfall spreads across the region. you can see the totals of big range with maybe trace amounts in the south bay to half an inch up in the north bay for the coastal hills. that once again will be for the first half of your sunday. here is our forecast model showing you this with the approach of the rainfall first thing tomorrow morning. once again, just a chance in

the south bay down towards san jose. morgan hill and gillroy. and then into the afternoon hours by 4:00, a bick decrees in the overbig decrees in the overall coverage. a spotty shower. by this time tomorrow night completely dry with partly cloudy skies. so rain showers and a chance in the south bay. temperatures from 55 to 60 degrees. by lunchtime, by 12:00 mostly sunny skies. a chance of a shower. low to mid-60s. we will have partly cloudy skies and a bit of a breeze out there 62 to 74 degrees. as far as the events for tomorrow at lest the sporting events with the giants and also the raiders you can see still some lingering clouds. a shower from 12-2:00. but the probability decrees quite a bit as we do head into the afternoon hours. forecast highs tomorrow 60s and 70s. with the passage of that cold front temperatures come down a few degrees from today's highs. it will not feel as muggy. san jose 73. san francisco is 65. half moon bay is 62 degrees.

here is a look ahead. your five day forecast. and after tomorrow's event you can see pretty quiet out there with temperatures warming up a little bit for your monday. and then cooling off just slightly for tuesday, wednesday, thursday could be the warmest day of the week with the warmest temperature right around 80. if you want to be outside tomorrow. keep an eye on the afternoon hours. it looks like the timing may work out for the second half of the day. >> don't wash the car. >> you have an excuse. >> thanks, mc. >> well, morning drizzle in the east bay didn't put a damper on the festivities at an annual west oakland block party. folks said they quickly moved inside the meeting hall at the greater baptist church. and they had a day-long celebration with people in the neighbor. >> and what we've done is we need to give to the community. so we're here today to give backpacks, free haircuts, information on services in our community. healthcare information. employment information.
